Music was an important part of everyday life in Ancient Greece. It influenced their sports, theater and daily work. Men at work in the fields would sing songs to help pass the time, while oarsmen would often have a drum beating to help keep the rhythm of the strokes. Women in the kitchens would sing too, or they may even have a an play the flute for them while they worked. Music was a major part of the Ancient Greek theater, with often an entire chorus with up to 25 members. At sporting events such as the Olympics, music helped to encourage and support the athletes.

-The playing and performance of music comes early to all settled communities of people and we have evidence of a multi-stringed lyre from Macedonian Greece dating back to 3100 BC. Obviously the origins of this instrument will date back even further.
